Who Is Moving Into and Out of My Community?
January 22, 2020
We recently reported that more people have been moving out of Virginia to other states than have been moving in. You may be wondering if that’s true in your community. Or, you may just be curious about where people go when they move out, and where those moving in have come from.
Virginia REALTORS® is planning to do more research on the characteristics of people both moving out of and into Virginia. In the meantime, there is a great online tool available from the U.S. Census Bureau that lets you take a look at movers into and out of counties and cities in Virginia.
You can see a map showing where people are moving to and from, or if you click on “View Data Table” you can get specific numbers. Below is part of the table for Greene County:
According to this data, over the 2013 through 2017 period, on average, 208 people left Greene County and moved to Orange County each year. Another 120 people moved away to Onslow County, North Carolina.
You can also see where people are moving into Greene County from by sorting on the Total column:
156 people moved into Greene County from Augusta County. From outside of Virginia, 75 people moved to Greene County from Mercer County, New Jersey.
This data can give you a snapshot of the movement of people into and out of counties and cities across Virginia. And, it’s also a lot of fun to play around with! If you need any help using this online too, or if you are looking for more information, please email me.
