Wetland taxation rules disputedChincoteauge's representative on the Board of Supervisors is pushing for the minimum acreage required for land-use taxation of wetlands to be equal to that of farmland. As of now the minimum requirement for agriculture is five acres, but for wetlands it is 20 acres. The "Chincoteague's representative on the Accomack County Board of Supervisors wants owners of wetlands to have the same tax advantages as owners of farmland, including a smaller minimum acreage requirement to qualify for land-use taxation. 'If it's five acres for agriculture, then it should be five acres for nontidal wetlands,' Supervisor Wanda Thornton said at a recent board meeting." Posted on Saturday, July 18, 2009 - 7:31am
