Needed Fort Monroe upgrades to cost $80 million

photo by U.S. Army Environmental CommandA study of Fort Monroe's infrastructure -- including streets, bridges, gas, communications, flood protection, electricity, waste water, storm drainage, and other issues -- shows that the military base will need upgrades to the tune of $80 million as it transitions to civilian use.

Hampton doesn't have that kind of money available in its budget, and officials are hoping to get federal dollars to make some of the needed changes.
